We have assisted with enough moves to know that there are always a few tense moments, but we have noticed that as long as you follow our tips, the stressful moments are few and far between. We’ve also noticed that when you strive for a stress-free move the experience morphs from an agonizing chore you’re just trying to get through into an interesting adventure.

Here are the helpful tips we’ve learned for planning a stress-free move.

Start Planning Early

The most important aspect of planning a stress-free move is starting the planning process as early as possible. This includes things booking your removal company, shopping for your next residence, and exploring schools. The early planning not only helps eliminate the stress and general sense of disorganization that goes along with a move that is planned at the last moment but also helps generate a genuine sense of excitement about the new adventure.

The best thing about planning your move as early as possible is that the extra time allows you to carefully research every single aspect of the move. You can research your moving company options and choose the one with the best reputation. You can research the best routes and create backup plans, you can learn where the best stopping points are.

Starting early keeps the process from becoming overwhelming and stressful.

Make Decluttering a Priority

It might be too early to start officially packing up your home, but even if the move is months away, you should go through your house and start decluttering. This is a great time to go through your closets, attics, storage sheds, and cupboards and get rid of the things you don’t need or want.

Packing always takes longer than you think, which is why it’s better to start as soon as possible. When you’ve cleared away everything you no longer need, the best thing to start with is the rooms you use the least.

Create a Packing Plan

Creating a packing plan in place is a key aspect of a stress-free move. Start by clearing out a place to store your packed boxes until moving day. Know what items can be packed early and which need to stay available until the day you’re ready to move. Make sure the boxes are clearly labeled.

Don’t try to reduce your moving cost by using inferior packing supplies. Broken and damaged boxes can delay a move and increase the odds of items getting lost or broken during the move.

Decide How to Handle Your Pets

Create a plan for making the move as easy on your pets as possible. This is a key component of a stress-free move. Take them to their current vet for an examination before the move and have a vet booked for when you relocate so that they’ll take you if the move harms your pet. Make sure the items your pet needs are easily accessible during the move and as soon as they arrive at your new home.

You also need to create a plan to deal with your pet in transportation. Know exactly what you’ll do to keep them contained and safe while movers are in the house, you stop on the road for gas, and during overnight stays. A lost pet makes a move extremely stressful.
