You know that you have a big move in your future, but you have no idea of how to prepare for the experience. Each time you think about what needs to be done, you get overwhelmed and can’t figure out where you should begin.
Following this simple list will help you start prepping for your move. The sooner you follow each step, the less stressful your move will be.
Pick a Moving Date
One of the mistakes people often make is that they don’t set a specific date for the move. You really should pick a moving date as soon as you know you’re moving. Having a concrete date helps you do things like making sure the place you’re moving into will be available, allows you to work more easily with utility/cable/internet providers to ensure that everything is move-in ready. It also helps you confirm that a moving company is available.
Create a Checklist
You won’t believe how much easier a simple checklist makes moving. It doesn’t have to be fancy, a list of important dates connected to your move and what moving-related chores need to be done written on notebook paper and taped to your fridge will suffice.
The best way to put this list together is first to make a list of things that need to be done prior to your move. Include things like:
- Hiring a reputable moving company
- Finalizing moving dates
- Communicating with various utility companies (in addition to making sure you have utilities at your new place, make sure your name is removed to the utilities connected to your current location)
- Medical/veterinary appoints
- Picking up moving boxes
- Changing your address at the post office
- Having everything packed
Once you’ve created the list of things that need to be done, figure out a specific date when you want to complete each task. When the task is completed, check it off.
Choose a Moving Company
When you first say your moving, you’ll likely have a bunch of friends and relatives say they’ll help. This is great! The problem is that many people find that when the actual moving day rolls around, those friends and family members are nowhere to be found. Suddenly a move that seemed easy has become a logistical nightmare.
In the long run, you’ll likely be better off with a good moving company in your corner. Not only will they absolutely be available on your moving day, but they also have the experience and resources needed to make the process as smooth and free of stress as it can be.
Declutter Your Home
Before you start packing, go through your home and look for clutter. Decide what items you can’t bear to part with and which should be donated to charity. Decluttering your home before you start packing is a great way to streamline the moving process and gives you time to really decide what you want to keep and what you can part with. Many people are surprised when they discover that they have enough stuff they’re getting rid of that they can have a successful yard sale.
