When it comes to moving, most people fully intend to get started as soon as possible. The plan is to get as much stuff packed up in the months leading up to the move. The problem the mass majority face is that life gets in the way and despite their best intentions, they suddenly realize that the move is right around the corner and they haven’t packed a single item.
One way to avoid last-minute packing and stress is planning a packing party. This is exactly what it sounds like. You get a group of close friends and family members together and everyone packs and parties. Not only is it a great way to pack all your stuff in a short period of time, but it is also a wonderful opportunity to make some great memories.
The key to putting together a great packing party is to invite lots of people and have plenty of prep work done.
The first step in the prep work is giving everyone a great deal of advanced notice about the packing party. Make it clear that the party will last all day long (and maybe even the entire weekend if there’s lots of packing to do!) Let people know that they can stay for the entire packing party or that they’re free to simply show up for a few hours. Giving people lots of options is a great way to ensure lots of people accept your invitation.
Make it very clear that people will get fed. It doesn’t matter if you simply plan on picking up pizza or are going to grill burgers, have lots of food and drink. Do not expect your guests to fend for themselves or to bring a dish to pass. They’re helping you pack, the least you can do is feed them.
In the weeks leading up to the packing party, you have two things you need to do. The first is gathering lots of boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, and other packing supplies. The second is clearing your home of all the items you don’t wish to take on your move. Anything that you plan to sell, give away, or donate should be out of your home before the packing party kicks off.
Have you ever been involved in a packing party? If so, what made it a fabulous event?
